10 Simple Ways For a Meditation Practice

If you’re craving a deeper connection to yourself and the divine, meditation will help you achieve this. As the rising rate of depression and stress continues to increase, meditation is a simple tool for peace of mind.

1. CREATE YOUR SACRED SPACE

Sacred Space

Choose a specific place in your home that is reserved for your meditation practice.  Put photos of your teachers, including your parents, and yourself as a child, special crystals, and sacred items to you.

2. CHOOSE A TIME AND DURATION

Review what time of day best works for you. Early morning or late evening are suggested, as there is more stillness outside at that time. Our energies reflect the external energies. Decide ahead of time how long you will sit for? Even sitting for 10-20 min is a great start. Make it a commitment to yourself. Set your alarm for that time each day. Somedays will be easier than others.

3. YOU ARE LIGHT

Awaken your peaceful warrior

Have a candle or oil lamp on your alter. Each time you sit for your practice, repeat, “I light this candle to remind me of the light that I am” over a period of time, you will feel the inner shift, the grounding and supportive energies of these words. You can also use it as a tratika (focal point)

4. WRITE IT DOWN

Have a journal or whiteboard to record your intentions, affirmations, reflections and insights. Review your entry each day.

5. COMMITTING TO YOU

If you wish to become a better person, create more peace in the world it begins within. There will be no bells and whistles that go off, it’s not sexy, it’s not even exciting. Yet, there are many gifts received from daily meditation,  including, feeling more grounded, present, calm and insightful. It’s like planting a seed in your garden and all good things happen slowly. You will most likely want to move, before the time is finished, don’t! Stay present and committed (unless you’re in pain) to not moving or ending from your practice.

6. INVITE THE WITNESS

Humans are so used to believing their own thoughts and creating inner stories, see if you can invite your inner witness, without feeding your thoughts. See the thoughts like clouds moving across the sky of your inner mind.  Watch your thoughts as if you were outside of them.

7. BREATHE

There are millions of meditation out there, start simply by watching your breath rise and fall. Breathing in say, I am breathing in ______________, maybe you need more trust, or love so you would fill in the blank with what you need, then as you exhale, repeat I am breathing out _______________ again fill in the blank. It’s that simple.

8. PEACE BEGINS WITHIN

All that you need is within, yet few create time to do so and be still.

Stress is not found outside of our own mind. They have spent millions of dollars trying to find stress, and it’s an inside job. Imagine it’s your last day on earth, and whatever might be stressful, will not seem just a big deal.

9.OPEN YOUR HEART

10. HAVE NO EXPECTATIONS

Do the best you can each day without expectations. Then there will be no disappointment, just continuous learning into cultivating presence. You are the only one who can gift this state of mind to yourself. Are you ready?
