9 Simple Ways to Cultivate a Meditation Practice

If you’re craving a deeper connection with yourself and the divine, meditation can help you achieve this. As rates of stress and depression continue to rise, the simple practice of daily meditation offers a powerful path to peace of mind.

Create Your Sacred Space

Choose a place in your home dedicated to this practice. If possible, face East—the direction of the rising sun, symbolizing new beginnings. Fill your space with meaningful items: photos of teachers, your parents, or yourself as a child, along with crystals or other sacred objects that inspire you.

1. Choose a Time and Duration

Find a time that works best for you—early morning or late evening are ideal, as the world tends to be quieter. Decide how long you will sit and commit to it.

2. You Are Light

Light a candle or oil lamp on your altar. Each time you begin, say:
“I light this candle to remind me of the light that I am.”
Over time, you’ll feel a subtle inner shift and grounding from this ritual. You can also use the flame as a focal point (tratika).

3. Write It Down

Keep a journal or whiteboard nearby to record your intentions, affirmations, reflections, and insights. Review your entries regularly to stay connected to your growth.

4. Commit to Yourself

If you wish to become a better person and create more peace in the world, it begins within. Meditation isn’t flashy or instantly exciting—but its gifts are profound: greater presence, calm, grounding, and insight. Progress happens gradually. When the urge to move arises before your time is complete, stay. Commit to remaining present and finishing your practice.

5. Invite the Witness

We’re so used to believing and reacting to our thoughts—but have you ever simply observed them? Use this time to watch your thoughts as if you are separate from them, cultivating awareness without attachment.

6. Breathe

There are countless meditation techniques, but start simple. Observe your breath as it rises and falls. As you inhale, say:
“I am breathing in ______.”
Fill in the blank with what you need—trust, love, peace.
As you exhale, repeat:
“I am breathing out ______.”

7. Peace Begins Within

Everything you need is already within you, yet few take the time to be still. Stress is not something “out there”—it originates in the mind. Imagine it’s your last day on Earth; many of your current worries would lose their weight and urgency.

8. Open Your Heart

At the start of your practice, breathe into your heart space. Cultivate gratitude for all that you have—your family, the Earth, the sun, and life itself. Gratitude keeps the heart open and expands your energy.

9. Have No Expectations

Show up each day and do your best, without expectations. Let go of outcomes. In doing so, you release disappointment and simply learn to be present.
